“The first step when we attune to a child who is struggling is not telling, teaching, or instructions. It is being present with the child.” ~ Mona Delahooke, Beyond Behaviors
Why did I choose the name Calm Kids Counselling? It is not because I think that kids should be calm, quiet, and compliant at all times. On the contrary; I believe it is essential to allow kids to be their quirky, full-of-life, sometimes un-calm, authentic selves. However, in this busy world, we need to help kids build the capacity to find calm when they need it. I am passionate about helping kids, and parents, find their calm. In my counselling practice, I provide support for children, youth, and families experiencing challenges related to school and/or home. Using a neuroscience-based, child-centered approach, I work with families to build balance and connection through a focus on strengths, problem-solving and coping skills, and play. My areas of practice include social and emotional difficulties, anxiety, depression, trauma, school avoidance and anxiety, parenting skills, prenatal and postpartum health, and peer and family relationships. In addition to working directly with children, I am passionate about supporting the health and wellness of parents, including those who are expecting and those brand new to parenthood. Many parents experience stress, anxiety, and depression, whether in the prenatal, postpartum, or later stages of parenthood. I provide counselling support and workshops aimed at enhancing coping skills and cultivating support networks. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, as well as a School Counsellor and BC Certified Teacher. I am well-versed in the BC curriculum, the complexities of the school system, and mental health in schools, having worked in many diverse school communities. Last but definitely not least, I am the parent of two lovely, active kids. I have firsthand experience in the joys and challenges of parenting! |
